The Air Force contract document does not say what it means by "existing systems." Jet aircraft, or supersonic ramjets, are not exactly new technology - they have been tested for decades, but so far no country has successfully fitted a practical air-breathing scramjet engine to a missile or aircraft. These engines work by using the immense force of air flowing into the vent at supersonic speeds and higher to compress the air inside the engine, which is then mixed with fuel and detonated from behind to gain propulsion.
