Background: The Königsberg was a German light cruiser in service from 1929 to April 1940, including during the WWII. Königsberg served as a training ship for naval cadets throughout the 1930s and took part in non-intervention patrols during the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s. Following the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, it laid defensive minefields in the North Sea, and subsequently took part in the April 1940 invasion of Norway, Weserberg. During the attack on Bergen, it was badly damaged by Norwegian coastal artillery and sunk by Norwegian coastal guns. The next day, Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Thief Gull fighter-bombers were moored in the harbour. The wreckage was eventually recovered in 1942 and dismantled for scrap in 1947.
