Background: This aircraft, known as the B-17 “Flying Fortress,” was a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the United States during the 1930s. It made its first flight in July 1935 and officially entered service in April 1938, becoming well known for its impressive high-altitude performance and exceptionally strong structure. The B-17 typically carried a crew of ten, including the pilot, navigator, bombardier, and defensive operators. It could be equipped with multiple onboard defensive weapons, and its internal bomb bay usually carried up to 4,000 pounds (about 1,818 kilograms) of payload.
